In the last 20 years, health care providers have been aware of the role of and needs of caregivers of disabled elderly. Adult children or spouses of chronically ill, functionally dependent elderly residing in the same home are burdened with a caregiving role physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
If these caregivers are not provided respite from their duties, their health may suffer or the carereceiver may be neglected and abused. Traditionally, the term "respite care" has applied to a brief temporary institutionalization of the carereceiver so that the caregiver can be provided relief from confining duties.
In this paper, a variety of respite care which have been utilized in the western countries will be introduced and discussed related to Korean situation.
